Ok story but not some groundbreaking work of art. For all the symbolism people say is in the book I expected something more. I just think people sniff the farts of Mccarthy too much. It is an ok story that shines a light on just how rough the west really was. The violence was childish at best and not in anyway emotionally pulling. For all the big words used to just be a mediocre story is off putting. The story is really only special if you have no real understanding that most people are morally gray. I do enjoy the nihilistic view of war. Humans have been and always will be at war with something. To not be at war is to not be human. The book could have been so much better without all the flowery language and more studybof the human condition. But overall just a mediocre book by an author who thought too highly of himself.

Bad book. Flat characters, no mystery, and a boring, overplayed concept.

Very, very mediocre. Good coming of age story but nothing close to the glowing praise from many others. It's billed as something it's not. Warning to anyone expecting action and intrigue, there is none. Maybe book 2 will be better but I have serious doubts. It's just a man dictating his story in his own words. Nothing more and nothing less. The author makes attempts at showing a wider story and a mystery but fails on both accounts. The magic is overly complicated for very little payoff. One of the worst marriages of science and magic I have read. The book just felt childish. Personally, this whole book screams of YA trying to be adult with none of the prerequisites needed. It's not dark, fun, or action filled. Generally just an ok book by an ok author.

Absolutely trash story structure. Why give the whole thing away halfway through the book. Not one ounce of mystery or intrigue. Humor was ok but honestly felt ham fisted in application. Just an aimless mess. The movie was and is leaps and bounds better than this half thought out drivel.

Great first novel. Hits all of the high points that I want in a revenge novel. The politics of the novel are just icing on the cake. It's nice to see more equal representation in written media start to find a place again. While not quite on the level of Clancy, it definitely scratches an itch that he left behind. I like how Carr uses his knowledge and years as a SEAL to pull back the curtain on special forces and how he shows who the real evil in the country is.
