I loved this book!
This is one of my favorite authors, but I was still skeptical. Killer mermaids? I decided to read it anyway and I loved it!!
The Atargatis sailed 7 years ago to film a mockumentary about mermaids. Instead, they all died. Some of the footage and info made it back before they died, but most people thought it was nonsense. Not everyone thought that. Many in the scientific community thought it was real, a chance to discover a new species.
Victoria Stewart just wanted the truth. Her sister died on that trip.
Now, 7 years later, Imagine Entertainment is prepared to send another ship. This one is prepared for anything. Loaded with every relevant scientist, and lots of security, they are ready to get underway and finally get some answers.
I listened to this one, and the audiobook is fantastic! I loved the narrator. This is one of those on the edge of your seat books and it should definitely be made into a movie. I was totally invested in these characters, and I did not want to put it down. I am ready for the next one!!
I haven't read very much sci-fi, and never played Dungeons and Dragons, but I really enjoyed this book. I love the characters! Their little D & D group had me from the start. Such a diverse group that just fits perfectly together.
Nick is 15, and he's dying. There is also a man following him that is a stranger but not a stranger. There are a couple of bullies he is trying to avoid. What will kill him first: chemo, stalker, bullies? Best to just go hang out and play Dungeons and Dragons where things are less weird!
I was really excited that this was an Amazon first book this month. I hope the next one will be too. If not, I will still buy it. It's Mark Lawrence after all!
2.5 stars
This story is set in 1491 Grenada at the time of the Spanish Inquisition.
Fatima is the last concubine. Her friend Hassan is a mapmaker. Not a normal mapmaker, as his maps lead to Other places.
When Fatima learns that an Inquisitor has figured out Hassan's abilities, she knows they must flee or he will die.
This book was very slow. I liked Fatima and Hassan as characters, otherwise the rating would have been lower. This just wasn't for me.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 stars
I was really excited about this book as soon as I heard about it. I loved the blurb, and the cover is fantastic.
A girl who talks to the Gods is the only hope of stopping the war with the godless Tranavia. That should be enough to get you to read the book.
I was very conflicted in rating this one. I really enjoyed it, but I hate the good girl meets bad boy trope. Everything else was great, but that was a major downer for me. That being said, I still plan to continue the series because there is so much that didn't get resolved.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a story about the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike and how it effected Cassie and her family and the rest of the city.
I had never heard of this strike until I saw this book. We follow 10-year-old Cassie as the strike begins, and we get to see what role everyone takes during a strike. Especially women and girls. I found it interesting how big a role the women took, and how it never got talked about in the news.
I also thought it was great that she wrote this when her daughter was a child, and her daughter had it published after her mothers' death.

This has been on my shelf for quite a while. I decided to finally check it out. I am so glad that I went with the audiobook! Audiobooks are really hit or miss for me, but this one was great! I loved this narrator.
I loved everything about this story. The world is interesting, especially Weep. Weep is fascinating. I adore Lazlo. Everything about this is great. I didn't even mind the insta-love. This is a beautifully written story. I will definitely read Muse of Nightmares.
Meg has suffered from depression since her mother's death. Add the guilt of hurting her boyfriend when she intentionally drove into a tree, and you have a pretty troubled young woman. Her doctor is going to let her try a new and experimental drug to help with her treatment.
I really wanted to love this book. I love The Hollows series, it is one of my all time favorites. Sadly, this one was not for me. I don't really think it should be classified as fantasy. I'm not sure what category I would put it in. I just know that I did not enjoy it.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a debut epic fantasy. We follow multiple POV's. It's both character and plot driven. Lots of political intrigue. I enjoyed the magic system and the world building. I loved these characters! I thought it started out slow, but that is typical in the first book in a fantasy series. Once I figured out who everyone was and where they were from, it was very fast paced. I didn't do much besides read this on my days off. I definitely thought about it even when I wasn't reading it.
Lots of questions to be answered in the next book! I can't wait!
I received an ARC from the author, but I have already purchased a physical copy.
Austin Lively thought he'd hit it big in L.A. as a screenwriter. Not so much. He's barely scraping by. He's also not sure if he's going crazy or not. Sometimes when he opens a door, he ends up in a different realm. Since it has happened more than once, he needs to figure out what's going on. Crazy or not crazy.
I thought this book was good. It's funny. The characters are pretty interesting. I gave it 3 stars because I don't think it will stick with me. If I wasn't reading it, I wasn't thinking about it.
I received a copy from Edelweiss.
The Women's War is set in a time when a woman's only importance is to produce an heir. Men are the magic users. Men have all the power.
Three women decide to change that. Even if means their deaths.
I loved this book. I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars, but even if I'm in the minority, I felt it deserved the 5. A fantasy where the women rise up and take a stand? I'm in! I love political intrigue in fantasy, and this book has plenty. I thought the magic system was unique and interesting. And I loved the characters! Quite a few trigger warnings, but it makes their fight even more important.
I am excited to read more in this series.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was having trouble picking an audio book, and I saw this one on Hoopla. I decided to check it out, and I enjoyed it. I haven't read very many cozy mysteries, but I liked it. I plan to listen to the rest of the series at some point. I think these will be great in between all the fantasy books that I read just for the change of pace.
Historical fiction.
Witches.
Those are the words that made me want to read this book. I was not disappointed. Set in 1612, this book really paints a good picture of what it would've been like then. I enjoyed it, and I think I will add it to the books I like to read around Halloween.
I received a copy from Net Galley.
This is a definite must-read for fantasy lovers! I was drawn in from the first page and the action and intrigue never let up at all. This book has everything that appeals to me in a fantasy. I loved the plot, the characters, the world, all of it.
I will be impatiently waiting for the next book to see what happens next!
I received a copy from Net Galley.
This has been on my tbr for a while now. I am so glad I finally picked it up! It's a super short story and I didn't want to put it down.
Eleanor West runs a home for wayward children. Children that have went through doors to other realms that just want to go back.
I really enjoyed this and plan to continue the series.
This book follows nursing student Aggie. In a school that focuses mainly on the Bio-Mechanical program, Aggie is one of the few that actually cares more about the poor patients coming in than building a Bio-Mechanical army. But war is brewing between Germany and England. It will take Aggie and everyone else to see that the war never happens.
I actually liked this better than the first book. It seemed faster paced, and had less romance. Overall it was a fun read.
This book intrigued me because I'm always up for a good heist story.
Severin's whole life has been spent trying to acquire enough wealth to take back what is rightfully his. His inheritance, His House. If Severin and his team can pull of one last major heist, the Order of Babel will perform the bloodline test and his House will be restored.
I enjoyed most of this book. The middle lagged a bit. The characters were my favorite part. I especially liked Laila. I just didn't have that “I can't wait to read more” feeling with this book. I will probably read the next one just to see what happens, but I can't say I'm in much of a hurry for it.
I received a copy from Net Galley.
I was sent an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I have had Rob J. Hayes on my TBR for quite a while now. I have a kindle, but much prefer physical books. I think that is the only reason I haven't read any of his stuff until now. When offered an ARC, I decided to finally check his writing out. I was not disappointed.
This story follows eight year old Ein on a mission to kill the emperor. To do this, he has been granted the power to bring warriors and heroes back from the dead to aid him. He already knows who he'll raise from the dead. They are heroes from the stories his father used to read to him. Now they have to die so he can bring them back to life. It's the only way to kill the emperor.
I really enjoyed this. The characters are so different from each other. I loved how they started off strangers and grew to be a team and a dysfunctional sort of family. They each have their own kind of magic that was interesting. I loved some of the names they gave each other.
I liked this book so much that I have already bought physical copies of his first 2 series! Highly recommend for all fantasy readers.
Binti and her Meduse friend Okwu have been at Oomza Uni for a year. Binti feels that the time is right to return home for her pilgrimage. Okwu will go with her as an ambassador for the Meduse.
Not only will her family see her physical changes for the first time, but Okwu is the first Meduse to visit Earth in peace in 100 years.
I really enjoyed this. I find the races and cultures fascinating. I also really like the narrator.
This year I decided that one of my goals would be to try some sci-fi. This one is pretty short so I thought it would be a great place to start.
Binti is human. Her people are the Himbu. She has never been to another planet. She has never even been away from home. All that is about to change.
Binti has been accepted at Oomza University. It is the most prestigious school in the galaxy. She will be the first of her people to go there.
What should be a simple trip to a school in another galaxy quickly becomes so much more.
I listened to this one and I thought it was great. I loved the story, Binti, and the brief glimpse of the other races left me wanting more. I also loved the way it ended. I have to read the next one with an ending like that!
I loved the narrator too!
After her entire village was killed, Janneke was taken by a goblin to be his thrall. After being raped, tortured, and disfigured, she was tossed to the goblin's nephew Soren. Luckily for her, he was not like his uncle Lydian. He made sure she was nursed back to health, and has taken care of her for years. She has been a thrall for 100 years to be exact.
When Soren is summoned to the Erlking (goblin king), he decides to take Janneke with him. Knowing that Lydian might be there, she is not excited to go. One hundred years is not enough to erase the torture she endured. At least now she's not weak. Soren saw to that.
While on their visit, the Erlking dies. Soon The Hunt will begin. Whoever gets the White Stag becomes the new Erlking. Janneke must help Soren win. Lydian cannot become Erlking. She will kill him or herself first.
This started out great, but went downhill. I lost interest fast. I didn't like the characters at all except for Soren. The world was not interesting, and I just didn't enjoy it much. It does have a beautiful cover though. I don't think I will continue the series.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a fast, fun read. It felt more middle grade than YA to me. It was ok, but not very intriguing. The characters are forgettable, and there's not much going on as far as a plot. I would definitely recommend it for middle grade readers though.
I received a copy from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Eve Whitby is a medium. She can see and talk to ghosts. She has been chosen to be in charge of the Ghost Precinct. Her unit will assist the police when only a ghost can lead them in the right direction. Not only is the Ghost Precinct unusual because of it's supernatural ties, but this is back when women couldn't hold those types of jobs. It was unseemly.
I really wanted to like this book, but I was bored from the start. I didn't connect with the characters, and I didn't really care what happened.
