Without a knowledge of English history around the time of crazy King Henry it's difficult to understand the characters and their interactions. Its definitely got some interesting parts and I think if I come back to it a second time I'll pick up a lot I missed. This is all due to my lack of background on the history of that country and that time.
A new edition is promises soonish but this is still an amazing technical book. Practical and clear and wise. Its gritty Boston as a quiet bartender makes a journey of faith through the violent world around a drop bar in an area that probably bears a striking resemblance to the Dorchester that Lehane grew up in. Similar to Elmore Leonard in capturing the patterns of speech of the subculture. And, hey, its a movie too. Will have to see if I can catch that to see how it was interpreted for the screen.
