So torn about this book. It is at times exquisite, fascinating and deeply moving, particularly when she writes about her life.
But I struggled hugely with the frequent forays into jargon-heavy theory, as they were written (it felt) with a high expectation of the reader's level of understanding and intellect.
I wanted so much to learn, but came away feeling stupid and frustrated, yet with a craving to read more about her life.
I've given this 5 stars for being the first book I've read this year that I literally couldn't put down. Not at first though, it took me a while to get into it but something clicked in the last 24 hours that made me devour the last 80% of the book.
I can only speak for myself but I think that building a girl never ends. I'm still trying to ‘fake it till I make it'. I think it takes a while to learn that what the world tells you you should be is frequently not at all what you should be!
As always I'm late to the party, but it is the likes of Caitlin Moran who have invited me in and helped me realise that instead of wishing I were a bloke because it would be easier, I want to be a strong, independent woman. One who might actually learn to like herself one of these days!
I had been wanting to get David's books for ages, having followed his antics on Facebook for years. Unfortunately, a few months ago David died and went to the bridge. This spurred me on to get his books in honour of his memory.
Now ordinarily people writing as their pets doesn't appeal to me but something about the way his clever mum Becky described the adventures of this goofy, accident prone greyhound always made me smile.
This is a lovely little book, even more so as the proceeds go to help other rescued and retired greyhounds (of which there are far too many needing homes). David became famous across the world and it's easy to see why.
I'm now reading his second book, which includes his campaign to run for Prime Mincer! Unfortunately it isn't on good reads so I can't review it directly.
Absolutely every woman should read this book. It is brilliant, funny, poignant, heart-breaking and wonderful, all at the same time.
Book contains harmful suggestions around brain rewiring and that your thoughts can cure physiological illnesses. Very harmful for the ME and Long Covid community.
