The premise of Against the Tide was intriguing, as was the beautiful cover art. Once I had begun reading, I was immediately pulled into Lydia Pallas's story. Here's a woman who is well traveled and educated, highly intelligent, and working on a small squad of translators for a naval unit. The mystery and plot kept me guessing and turning pages.
The thing that irritated me and overshadowed the intriguing parts of this story was that an opium addiction was the largest focus of the entire book. It was hard for me to enjoy the hunt for a way to beat the criminal, because there was such a heavy emphasis on the addiction. How terrible it was, all the symptoms the addicted person suffered with, and how a detoxification process works. If I had known so much of the story was focused on drugs and addictions, I probably wouldn't have read it, because those are things I don't prefer to read about.
This is my honest review.
