Executive Summary: When I say this is the weakest book of the series, that's less of a knock on this book as it is on the strength of the previous two. It's still quite good, just not quite as good as the others.Full ReviewSigrud was one of the highlights of [b:City of Stairs 20174424 City of Stairs (The Divine Cities, #1) Robert Jackson Bennett https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1394545220s/20174424.jpg 28030792]. When I heard he'd be the main character of this book, I was really excited. It was definitely fun to follow him around again, but at it's core this is a revenge plot, and not quite as interesting as the mystery plots of the last two. Then again, I read the last third of this book in one sitting. That by itself it pretty remarkable for me. This year it's even more impressive as my non-audiobook reading time has seemed to dwindle to almost nothing.I think this book took a bit of time to set things up. So while you get Sigrud being his usual badass self right from the start, the real meat of the story doesn't start clicking until later. There is definitely another mystery here, but the driving force behind everything is revenge.I think Sigrud worked alright as a main character, but works much better as a side character. Unlike Turyin Mulaghesh who really shone after being promoted from secondary character to protagonist, I felt Sigrud was just alright. He's more about brute force than anything else. That isn't to say he's one dimensional. He's dealing with a lot of personal demons. He's also a competent field agent.Things really ramped up for me once a certain event occurred. You'll probably know what I mean when you get there. After that it was like running downhill. I absolutely devoured the rest.I really enjoyed this book. It doesn't seem to have cured me of my reading slump apart from the time when I was reading it, but if this is the last Divine Cities book I'd be content. If however he decides to write another sequel, prequel or side-story, I'd be ready to pick that up on release day as well.
