So, I badly wanted to love this one, because a lot of my fave BookTubers have rated it really highly, but I didn't click with it. Which is not a really helpful review, I know. Put your critical thinking hat on, Raynor; use your words; why didn't you click with it? Idk, just didn't feel it in my waters, luvvies. Soz. 🤷
It's got everything I usually love from a book — compelling concept, creepy girls and children, dark horror-fantasy, beautiful writing, unsettling, otherworldly vibes, zero teenage boys — but for some reason, it was a slog for me to get through.
LOVED the twist. HATED the kiss.
But, I mean, I did start reading it in... what? May? And it might've taken me eight months, but I finished it, and it a weird way, I think that's actually a pretty great compliment?
The caveat was that I started what I call “books-on-tape”-ing it like I always do, but I had to return the library book, so I continued on just audio, and I didn't really vibe with the narrator, so that might have contributed.
Rounded up to 4 stars, because I feel like the problem was me more than the book, and cuz I would gladly read something else from this author.
