This is the sequel to ME, and I find it hard to evaluate on first reading; I'll give it a provisional 3 stars for now.
It's not an inferior sequel, it picks up the thread of the first book well enough, and arguably this one has a more complex and interesting story. But it's somewhat darker, and most of it is not a pleasant experience, as the version of ME that we know struggles to cope with a hostile and nasty version of ME that has also escaped onto the Internet.
There are human casualties in this struggle, although the survivors achieve a happy ending eventually.
I'll be able to evaluate the book better on rereading, although I don't think I'll rush to reread it. I generally like books with a better ratio of pleasant to unpleasant experiences. And there's less humour in this one.
