This is good military SF. A little rough at points, but damn good for a first book.
You can definitely tell that the author was a career military officer and knows whereof he writes. This story features a number of tough, professional characters (Mei-Ling being a stand-out among them). When their fleet is ambushed by unidentified assailants, they must repurpose their mission and take the fight to the enemy. But first, they must identify that enemy. The first part of this story involves a lot of planning and training, which serves to fill in the background of the world and establish most of the main characters. After that, the action gets hot and heavy, involving both fleet actions and down-n-dirty squad level fights. Mei-Ling and her companions face multiple do-or-die situations. Clausewitz's admonition that no plan survives contact with the enemy is well demonstrated.3.5 stars rounded up.( You can listen to an interview with Brendan Wilson over at the Wordshapers podcast.)
