A wealthy English paleontologist marries a young Austrian Jewess to save her from the Nazis who have recently taken over Austria. This marriage of convenience turned out to not be so easy to sunder under English law, and what you'd expect happens (sorry).

A fake marriage, misunderstandings... not so fond of that stuff.
But I love Eva Ibbotson's descriptions of Viennese culture, I love her heroines and heroes, I love her inserting jokes in the stories, and always the animals. There are always animals in her stories.
P.S. The pup has a “hero contract” - it is not harmed.
