“The choice is yours. Will you fight for what you want or let everyone step on you on their way to the top?”
That was one of my favourite quotes from this book. So beautiful and so powerful.
Now, let's begin the review. Where do I start? Well, first I want to say that this is my first Angela J. Ford book that I've read and I can't believe I haven't read anything by her until now. She has such a great writing style, I don't even know how to describe it, but it's the type of writing that makes you want to turn page after page. It flows, it helps you envision the world she created in such a beautiful way, it makes you a part of the story and it brings the characters to life. I will definitely check out more books by her after having the chance to read this one!
This book has action set both at sea and on land. If you're a fan of sea creatures such as mermaids, sirens, sea nymphs, then this is the story for you. It starts by following Darya, a sea nymph who is always searching for trouble. One day, instead of doing her duty, she leaves her guarding post because she sees something in the water that catches her attention. While she was away, not guarding the gate, an evil sea witch attacks the sirens and curses the water. The one chosen to go to the land in order to find a remedy is non other than Darya, our troublesome nymph. That's when her quest begins.
The book has multiple POVs and at first it might be confusing, because you won't understand how these characters connect to Darya's story and why you're reading things from their point of view. But as the story unravels, you will understand. Everything has a connection and I loved how the author combined these characters' stories into a bigger picture.
Following Darya and her quest, we're taken on an adventure where we can see her trying to find the courage to become better, to save the sea creatures. We see Darya struggle, grow and become stronger. She makes friends and enemies and she discovers things she didn't think were possible.
Besides Darya, the book follows Araceli's story, a simple librarian that lives in the great city of Nomadia, the capital of the Nomadian Empire. In parallel with Darya's story, Araceli's is one of growing, discovering what's best for her, following her dreams. I loved Araceli's character and how hard she tried to overcome her fears and become a better version of herself.
The book ends with a huge cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more, so now I can't wait to read the second installment in this series! I'm sure that Angela is going to do a great job on the next book, because she nailed this one!
