Winter in Wartime

It's the winter of 1944 and Michiel and his country are suffering through their fourth year of Nazi rule. There are food shortages and limits to travel and abrupt killings of civilians and Michiel has had enough. Though he is just a teen, and though it's a dangerous endeavor, he sets out to join others in the resistance movement.

The story is based on the author's experiences in the Netherlands during World War II during German occupation.

This is one of the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read. Having read it, I agree—it's definitely worthy of being on this list.
