I absolutely LOVE this book. I've got zero complaints. And the ending is satisfying.
Peter Clines does a great job showing just how easily and painfully someone's life can end in The Valley. The wildlife do not care if their victims have family, hopes and dreams; they do not share our morals. The screams of their prey do not matter. They just see and smell potential food. The Neanderthals are really not all that different from the local predators either, and I found their behavior towards the humans downright chilling.
The science is fantastic. The author did a great job steering clear of "well, we don't know how or why this works, so magic?". Once I thought I had it all figured out, I get thrown a curve ball the more I read on that left me thinking "Wait, really?!". It was really fun though seeing all the theories and ideas on how, what, when and where about the Valley come together.
I do wish we got to learn more about the Castaway. They were absolutely fascinating and I had to re-read their descriptions every time we came across them in the book. Not because the author did a poor job describing them, but because they're so fantastical and I wanted to make sure I was envisioning them within my mind correctly.
My favorite character ended up being Parker, which was a surprise as I wasn't much of a fan of her at the start. But she grew on me.
I hope to read this story again. Perhaps I'll listen to the audiobook next time instead.
