Sherlock Holmes die zich gedraagt als een CSI-rechercheur, geen raadsels en antwoorden zoeken, maar met wat scheikundetestjes en af en toe wat vechten, de dader opzoeken. Past gewoon niet bij Holmes. Erg jammer ook dat het verhaal zo saai is, want het artwork is echt fantastisch. Vladimir Krstc kiest zulke mooie perspectieven en kan daarin de architectuur zo gedetaileerd neerzetten. Als de sfeer grimmig of koud wordt neergezet, is dat door de tekeningen en niet het verhaal. Daarbij supersmaakvolle en passende inkleuring van Axel Gonzalbo die ervoor zorgt dat je sommige panelen vaker wil bekijken.

Fantastisch eerste deel van een serie van vier. Flashbacks zijn mooi verweven in het verhaal en prikkelen om de volgende delen te lezen. Als dit een TV-serie was, zou je ze gelijk willen ‘bingen'

De achtergrond van de Heilige Graal wordt als een soort Bijbels waarheid weergegeven en ook verder in het verhaal zie je paralellen met bijbelse personen en verhalen ( Maëlle krijgt net als Maria een kind verwekt door een geest, in dit geval deluchtgeest Elaüm). De toon wordt met de eerste deel goed gezet en Istin weet in 50 bladzijdes de aandacht en interesse op te wekken, maar ik ben nog niet overtuigd. Dat zal deel 2 moeten doen.

Tekeningen van Lambert zijn vooral prachtig in landschappen en weet een overstroming erg dreigend neer te zetten, vooral door het perspectief wat hij kiest. Lambert is niet heel sterk in gelaatsuitdrukkingen of verhoudingen van lichaamsdelen, wat ervoor zorgt dat de ene tekening beter werkt dan de andere.

Al met al een redelijk begin.

In dit derde deel is tekenaar Thimothée Montaigne vervangen door Roberto Jorge Viacava. Zijn stijl is meer van de moderne comics, maar past toch heel goed bij het verhaal. Het lijkt hierdoor zelfs wat duidelijker te worden en spannender.

Een heel boek op dit niveau.

Verder een zeer teleurstellende ontknoping.

Ondanks de beklijvende schrijfstijl van Alan Moore, knapte ik af op de jaren zestig illustraties van David Lloyd, maar nog meer op de afschuwelijke inkleuring van Steve Whitaker. Dit mag dan een politieke klassieker zijn die je gelezen moet hebben, ik zie dan liever de film die Alan Moore zelf verafschuwt.

In het kort is De Cirkel een beschrijving van een modern bedrijf als Google, Apple of FaceBook en hoe deze verandert in een fascistische organisatie. Het verhaal wordt beschreven vanuit de ervaringen van de 24-jarige Mae Holland die onderaan de ladder begint bij De Cirkel en hoe zij opgaat in de bedrijfscultuur. Knap hoe je geleidelijk aan eerst je kan vereenzelvigen met haar, maar later steeds meer vanuit een derde persoonperspectief afstand van haar neemt en ziet dat het fout gaat en maar blijft hopen dat zij dit ook gaat inzien. Het ligt er dus wel erg dik bovenop dat alles bij de cirkel te mooi is om waar te zijn en dat de schrijver ons voor die gevaren probeert te waarschuwen. Iets te zwart-wit naar mijnmening, maar zeker stof tot nadenken.

I like vinyl records, I like coffee table books. Mix them together and you still can get disappointed. I'm scraping this one of my list. It's very superficial, it's full of usual suspects, the photography isn't impressive and most of them are about lounge cafés or trendy bars with some record players on display. It also feels the author is a bit frustrated with visual artists being asked to design the artwork instead of graphic designers. Something I believe is the perfect match for this medium. For the rest, the layout is messy and the text is dual lingual, which annoys me even more. There are better candidates for this subject.

It's not perfect (as with any encyclopedia), but very helpful when reading marvel comics or watching their movies.

After taken 2 million photos over a period of 8 years, here we are presented with ‘only' 300 of them. Every single one of them nailing it, composition, the timing, the colours, the moment itself, but what stands out the most: Every single person in front (and probably also behind) of the camera is having fun, a good time or in appreciation of the moment. No one is posing, nothing is staged, it gives you the opportunity to really know a person in ‘just' 300 pictures. Or as photographer Pete Souza puts it himself ‘I hope the photos will show you the true character of the man, and the essence of his Presidency, as seen through my eyes and felt through my heart'

I loved the first two. The third didn't do it for me. Or maybe it was so good, it made me feel with an uncomfortable feeling.

I bought my first Apple computer in 1994 (a Macbook duo 230) and owned a lot of Apple products since then. This book was a trip down memory lane with lots of stuff I just forgot I owned (Apple iSight), lots of stuff I wish I owned (Bandai Pipin game console) and lots of stuff I didn't even know Apple made (Quicktake photo camera). All photos look really fancy and stylish as if they were made by Apple themselves, but were made by author Jonathan Zufi. I would have loved to read all about the products you see exposed on every page, but there isn't much info. This could be a kind of boring read if you're not into Apple (although if you like great design, it's interesting too), but for Apple owners and computer history interested collectors, it's a great historic document. Could use an update now though.

Have you ever traveled somewhere special to watch a location from a movie or series?

To find out which locations from a specific movie or series can be visited, I can recommend this book. It has been chosen not to go too deep into all locations and background, but more for quantity, so that there is a high chance that your favorite movie or series is included. The offer is therefore very wide from superhero movies like Batman and The Avengers to series like Outlander and Breaking Bad. On a trip recently in London I visited some locations from the Harry Potter movies, but it also works the other way around. This is how I found out that a certain street in Bath where I have already walked a few times, occurs repeatedly in the Bridgerton series. So I went to see that, after I had already been there. Very nice.

Yet a critical point, the division of the chapters. This is per movie or series, which may mean that you may have to go all over the world to visit all the locations. I would also have liked to see the approximation by location, for example a building or a city and then a summary of what is included there.

Op het gebied van Star Wars heb ik vele documentaires, making of, interviews en specials bekeken, filmpodcasts en interviews beluisterd, biografieën en collector books gelezen, maar deze grafische roman is veruit de beste, meest overzichtelijke, meest vermakelijke en meest getrouwe versie van het verhaal over het tot stand komen van deze iconische film. Het doet je nog meer beseffen dat haast niemand vertrouwen had in deze film (uiteindelijk zelfs ook George Lucas niet meer). Een opmerkelijk verhaal, niet alleen interessant voor Star Wars fanaten, maar zeker ook voor filmfanaten. Achterin nog een uitleg over het character design van Renaud Roche, wat hij fenomenaal heeft neergezet. De bibliografie en bronvermelding laten zien dat hier (net zoals bij de film) jaren werk in zit. Op alle fronten geef ik dit 5 uit 5 sterren!!
