Unfortunately, I read this book after becoming hooked on that new TV series “Once Upon A Time” and couldn't help but keep comparing it the whole time I read this. I probably would have liked the book better if I wouldn't have seen the TV show before reading it. However, this book and that TV show are for two entirely different audiences, so taking that into consideration, this was a great book. I'm sure my children will enjoy reading it themselves when they get older.
I thoroughly enjoyed he way the information was laid out in this book, and appreciate the simple, symbolic explanations of very complex processes and information involving the brain. I would recommend this book to all my educator friends whether they teach in public school or at home. To my Christian friends, you might want to be aware that there is lots of evolutionary talk, so if you are easily offended by this, you might want to skip this one.
This book saddens me in so many ways. But I see how it was a warning of what we can be if we let human kind follow a certain path. It's disturbing how very close I think we could be to a society similar to that in this book. Even more disturbing is that there are pieces of it already in place in our society, whether we realize it or not.
Great book about a boy overcoming not only being blind, but forgiving the person who caused it. I read this to my kids as a read-aloud, and they liked it a lot, especially my son since Jimmy and his friends were Boy Scouts. The only thing was since this was an older book, some of the expressions were out-dated, but I just altered them a bit so my kids would understand them as I read.
I read this book aloud to my children for bedtime, and near the middle of the book, they didn't want to quit reading, and were dying to know what happened next! For a children's book, I didn't think the ‘mystery' part of the book would be that deep, but surprisingly enough, I was still left trying to figure out what was going on up until the last 1/4 of the book!
I loved the way they fit the history in with the story, a great way to let my kiddos step back in time and pretend to be hanging out with children from Ancient Rome!
If you feel like you have a baby who is hard to please, you should read this, you may just find out that you a high needs child! My middle kids is a high needs kid, and this book helped me keep my sanity, and really understand what all the screaming was all about. I love Dr. Sears' parenting approach too.
Another great book by Jim Palmer. I feel I have traveled down a very similar path and it was refreshing to find that others are on this path too. If you are finding the religious institutions, traditions, etc. are weighing you down and confusing you about who God really is, this book will give you the courage to be free of those things and experience God in a real way.
Well, this one definitely presented a fresh look at politics for me. I could see that if you are very close minded, and do not enjoy hearing someone's point of view that is much different from your own, you would not enjoy this book. I liked the different point of view, I don't know if I agree with everything in the book, but definitely enjoyed reading it. I'll read anything Shane Claiborne writes...
It took me several months to finish this book, not because it was hard to read or boring, but because after reading the first few chapters I realized I needed to slow down and really digest each page so that I could really ‘get' the message that God was trying to share with me through Wayne.
I bought this book brand new, and it looks like it's been through several people's hands.. as worn as it is from traveling with me over the months it took to read it.
So, why is it that a book about God's love, or ‘the Father's affection” is only digestible in small pieces for a girl who has grown up in church her whole life and has followed Jesus since she was a little girl?
Well, If you're are like me, then here are the reasons why it might take some time to read this book:
* you feel guilty when you don't have a daily quiet time, or prayer time
* when something good happens in your life, you think God is pleased with you and is blessing you, and when something bad is happening you think God might be angry with you
* you consciously or subconsciously are trying to earn God's affection by doing the right things. Notice I didn't say “earning Salvation” I said “earning God's affection”
* trying to understand God's wrath in relation to God's love is difficult for you
* you think that the test of how much you love God is how well you keep his commandments.
This book took these things I thought/felt and either clarified, demystified, or revolutionized them for me. It's a book I will be thinking on a long time.
Very interesting book. Something to keep in mind is that this is not a true story, so there is no Missy, or that whole thing. I don't think the author claims this view of God as ‘holy' or ‘devine' or any of that, I think if anything, he just gives people a chance to imagine what it would be like if you got to sit down with the Creator of the Universe, how would that visit go? A great start to think about what God really thinks of us... and what we are supposed to do when bad things happen, or when we get angry at God.
