This was a fun read and tbh, I do not think I have related to a character more than Alice in a long while. I am kinda disappointed there's no explanation for the invisibility thing it's just like yeah it happens go with it so that was like..okay? But anyways great debut from an author still in college
This book was literally such a slog to get through sorry. I had to power through because I did not care about like anything about it. The plot? Basically YA LOTR. Evil dude called “Who Waits” I think idek if that was his name because it was as bland as the rest of the book but ya know is basically Walmart Sauron is probably trying to destroy the world but our merry band of heroes including the chosen one who wields the All Powerful Blade are the only ones that can stop him. The characters? I did not care about any of these characters at all as one dimensional as it gets. Like Corayne is special and and feels quirky 24/7 we get it. Dom is immortal woahh that's cool bro. Andry is a nice boi. Saransa (was that her name idk) is an edgy assassin with a #mysterious past. That completely sums up their personalities. Erida aka the royal one was the only character remotely interesting for spoilery reasons. Def an Erida stan may she get everything that is rightfully hers!! The setting? There were a lot of names said and places spoken but that is all I could tell you about them. Anyways this book was just boring and uninspired but I guess it wasn't the worst thing ever and someone out there might like it.
This book has a common complaint that the ending is predictable. I agree with that assessment. In fact I'd say almost all the individual elements that compose this story have already been done before. And yet, put together it still makes for a fascinating read. I had a good idea where the story was headed pretty early on but I immensely enjoyed the journey there.
I'd best describe this story as My Hero Academia meets Invincible. Yet where it really differs, is with the main character Matt. Matt was a refreshing character in this story, and the genre as a whole, being power less in a world where everyone isn't, yet with sheer determination and force of will, not being powerless.
Overall, I'm excited to see where the sequel goes.
I almost never reread books but today I reread this one so I can binge the whole series when the final book comes out in a few days. Been awhile since I read this (almost exactly 3 years) so it was as engaging a read the second time. I love the character work done here because the Lee/Annie relationship is fascinating and what really drives the book for me. The writing has a maturity rarely seen in YA, and it's criminal this never got more popular.
Now to see if the rest of the series holds up!
I slightly regret this reread because I had very fond memories of this series that had made it remain my favorite all time series. Until now.. Idk it's a fine series, but unlike say the Greenbone saga it's no masterpiece. Plot wise it's very basic and I think the villain is not at all compelling. I do have a particular fondness for the characters though, and the world itself, so I will be reading Threads of Power.
It was a pretty good end to the series, but honestly practically nothing happens in this book except for that ending. The ending had a real feel good feeling to it but I still felt it was pretty predictable of course Adelina died, why can't an antihero just become a hero without makiing the greatest sacrifice?.
Wow. I can't believe after all this time this series is finally over. I think I can say that this was a very fitting end to the series. You can really see how the war is affecting them, especially John. The whole book was filled with John and the others being badass of course, but they really have to push themselves. It's easy to see their struggle to save the planet and stop the bad guy. Speaking of stopping the bad guy, I think the way it was done was beautifully ironic John uses healing to stop him . Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for this book because I thought the previous books kind of got progressively worser, but this one proved me wrong. I don't want to give anything else away actually one thing that kind of surprised me was that no one else dies except Setrakus and Mark but this book was an excellent ending and it will not disappoint.
It's been awhile since my last Sanderson book, enough that this really made me remember that no one does fantasy like Sanderson!! So many cool things in this book with wider connections to the larger cosmere. Also reading this made me realize how out of touch I've become with the cosmere as a whole and that I really need to reread some things and read the novellas I haven't read. Like there was a MAJOR twist in Stormlight 4 that I completely missed until now... Anyways fantastic end to Era 2 and excited for what's to come!
I though this book was amazing..until I I reached the end. Now don't get me wrong, the ending was great too, I just felt it was too hurried. It just ended so suddenly with that cliffhanger and I think the book could have been longer. So overall, this book suffers from the same problem as most books that are the second in a trilogy, where it seems like there could be more in it that is instead being saved for the final book, but the writing is still excellent.
It's been a year and a half since volume 8 ended and here we are another 3 million words later. Mainstream author's like Sanderson get applauded for incredible work ethic and fast output, but to put it in perspective Pirateaba has written more in the last 2 years than the entirety of the Cosmere combined.
Anyways, I thought the ending of Volume 8 was awesome and didn't know if it would be topped, but Volume 9 was insane and did it somehow. Sometimes a story needs a good reset to give it new life and take it in new directions, and while at the time the end of volume 7 seemed like it was doing that for Volume 8, (and then the end of Volume 8 was more of a welcome return to form for Volume 9) I think the end of Volume 9 flipped the whole board over to give an interesting direction for Volume 10, and I will be there no matter what !
This series has been such a fun followup to Cradle so far. It's not quite uh ‘literature' and even less so than Cradle but it knows exactly what it is and has a blast with it. I liked that this book had a more compelling villain than the first one, but it does make me question if the gang is fighting Superman in book 2 where do you go from here. The future villains that have been setup I'm not feeling too confident on. I do wish there was a stronger focus on character development and relationships between the crew, I think that would really elevate it but I get its hard to juggle that with an ensemble cast.
