“every beloved object is the center of a garden of paradise”

well, the end made a sucker of me.

Years ago I took a class on California geology (thinking it'd fill a physical science pre-req without having to take a lab (clever me)) and it, surprisingly, was one of the more interesting classes I'd ever taken.

That said, my eyes did glaze over a bit reading some of the drawn-out descriptions of rocks and geologic formations in this book.

That said, I really enjoyed McPhee's style and wit, especially when he mixed history into his writing. The section on the California gold rush was particularly compelling.

If it isn't already, this should be required high-school reading (second semester freshmen year).

I ought to watch the special, too, I suppose.

I'm sure there's some kind of allegory here that I'm missing....

My favorite part is when they held hands.

Brand-conscious

or

I want to get a new wardrobe after this.

Economic anxiety. I now thirst for tsipouro.

also, very nice book construction.

well, the second-person instructional style for some of the stories was interesting, but the novelty wore off in the middle of the second story that used it.

I really enjoyed the epigraphs.

this guy has soil.

(“soul” autocorrected to “soil” and that seems appropriate)

human drama

+1 stars for inspiring a pretty good Earth album.

I've had this book for quite a while, read about 150 pages when I was younger... well, I've finally read it through.

crust punks are people, too

it is nice when anyone can eloquently transcribe their thoughts.

reads very much like one of jack london's dog tales.

drugs

nice title and dedication:

The love in this novel is for Tessa,
and the love in me is for her, too.
She is my little song.

but the book doesn't live up so much.

no one's life story needs more than 1o pages.

i liked the part about his blue jeans

i am assuming all of this happened.

I've had this book for quite a while, now, and it's finally complete.

nature/nurture stuff.

also, I'm never going out in the snow.

the metaphor got murky

stories that are short and feature covetous relationships and other life slices

pangs + performance
