“Men will always underestimate you.”
A beautiful, debut fantasy novel with loveable characters and an interesting, developing storyline.
Like a lot of other reviews may relate, it is similar to the likes of D&D and World of Warcraft, with the main ‘party' of characters having different classes and abilities. Our primary protagonist is Lucine, a Druid, and is joined by a Paladin, Assassin and Bard. Her brother, Solehan, is also a Druid, his interactions mainly with a Mage/Warlock of some sort. Their own class characteristics shine as we're introduced in various ways to these characters, some already have the skills as soon as we meet, while others need time for development and understanding of their powers. The character development for them feels natural and happens as the plot develops.
The world-building in Alaris is immense. We're introduced to many different areas, each having their own customs and background. Their ruling parties, as well as their views towards the magics of others beyond their own respective religion. The creatures introduced as also described vividly, with an attached Bestiary at the end of the book for reminders if needed.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly, having received a physical copy of the book from Fanny herself. It was difficult to put down, the chapters being portioned into easy to read sections. Though some areas felt almost a little bit too detailed, the overall story was beautiful, even with what I felt a bittersweet ending.
I look forward to more from Fanny in the future, whether it be another fantasy book or a sequel!
