Mr Calder and Mr Behrens appear to be two elderly, amiable gentlemen. Mr Behrens lives with his aunt at the Old Rectory in a small village and is a beekeeper, while Mr Calder lives on his own just outside the village with his deerhound Rasselas. In reality (as well as being amiable and elderly) they are a pair of ruthless agents who are brought out of their apparent retirement from time to time upon receiving a bank statement bearing a certain code. These stories are small works of art full of tension, sharp plot and a deft human touch.
