Quick read. Three stars for the story and another one for the fact that the author managed to wrap it all up in one book instead of dragging it out into a three or four book series like you see so often now. This was my first read by Melissa Marr and I enjoyed her writing. I'll be reading more by her.
This was a great, light read. It held my attention without taxing my brain too much. I think I have a new crush and his name is Byron. I must say my two favorite things about this story is the City of the Dead (I am fascinated, and want more, more, more) and my favorite character is Amity-no, really, a secondary character is so cool I kind of wish she had her own book.
I have my fingers crossed that this will be a series, because I am totally involved in this world.
I also have to give it high points for being pretty original and nothing like anything else I have read lately.
This is great summer reading, and I will recommend it to teens and adults.
3.5-4 stars: Good, not great.
I enjoyed that the story was unexpected–I didn't see where it was going, and that's unusual for me, and highly appreciated. It was quite different from your typical paranormal books–a newer mythology, which was also welcome. It's a quick read. I went in expecting a zombie book, and it's not that at all. The book has a different view on death and the dead and I found it refreshing.
