I'm going to need to pause my Alexis Hall full catalogue bingefest for a few books because the angsty bitter angst, self doubt, and beginning of childhood trauma healing of this series was emotionally draining and I'm tired and sad.
I've been reading too much and my brain is fried.
This book (well, really, the end of the last book through most of this one) broke me to the point where I could barely sleep until they got back together.
I love Alexis Hall's stories, but this is definitely one of my favorites. She's definitely a master storyteller.
I honestly don't know how to review this book. It's beautifully written, and it has stayed with me for days after I finished it. But it didn't quite give me the resolution I was hoping for regarding Arden and Caspian's relationship. I understand Hall's (and Ardy's) point that Caspian doesn't have to beg for forgiveness because he was always honest about what he could and couldn't give, and that the only thing he needed to change was how he saw himself. But maybe he could have groveled a little bit....? And while I also understand that this is just the beginning for the couple's relationship, I wanted a little more “happytogethertimes” (like a whole additional book in the series) than was provided.
I won't forget this series for a long time (if ever) but I can't quite bring myself to give it 5 stars because it didn't completely satisfy me. But bravo to Hall for taking a ridiculous premise (and horrible original source) and turning it into something meaningful, resonant and brilliant.
