A singer-songwriter and actress, Newton-John is best known for her starring role in Grease and for her advocacy of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. After successfully battling breast cancer in the early 1990s, she opened the Gaia Retreat, a spa and wellness center in Byron Bay, Australia. This cookbook features recipes from Gaia's head chef and his team. Newton-John follows a mostly vegetarian diet, and there are some completely vegan recipes in the book; however, moderate amounts of fish, eggs, dairy, and poultry are also included. A short introduction contains tips on organizing and stocking a healthy pantry, as well as sprouting grains, nuts, and seeds. The recipes are comfortingly simple, and the writing style is encouraging without being preachy. Some standout recipes include Almond Pancakes with Berries and Yogurt, Mushroom Soup with Lemon and Thyme, Balinese Chicken Curry, and Mango Tart with Date and Macadamia Crust. Verdict Newton-John has been a role model for women for over three decades. Recent appearances on Glee and a U.S. tour in 2011 have kept her image fresh and appealing across generations. Expect demand from patrons interested in simple but exotic vegetarian- and vegan-friendly fare.-Rosemarie Lewis, Georgetown Cty. Lib., SC(c) Copyright 2012.
