Some people are looking for a career change in Morelville and who knew that impact would have such an impact on Sheriff Crane, her town, and her marriage.
Sheriff Mel Crane is busy with what at first seems like random crimes that increase with violence with each crime. Crane and her crew are chasing gang members from bank robberies in cars and on foot to looking for drive by shooters killing other gang members. No one has a clue what is going on because none of the gang members are talking. In the meantime, medically retired Agent Dana Rossi has hit writer's block too many times and reaches out to an old employer looking for investigative side work and is immediately handed a case to verify whether a heiress is worthy of inheriting her trust and fulfills the moral clause of the trust. The couple is busy during their first year of marriage and Dana's mother starts to worry that they are not spending enough time together and gets Mel's mother involved to “help” the “kids” stay together. Rampant crime committing gang members, a questionable heiress, and meddling mothers make for a stressful time for Crane and Rossi - never mind the town.
Anne Hagan brings a different twist in Mad for Mel, seventh in “The Morelville Mysteries” series and it is nice to see Rossi back in the investigation field. There are a lot of characters to keep track of especially within the gang and Hagan gives us plenty of context so that when everything is revealed in the end, it makes sense. The humor of the situation comes from the meddling mothers of course and it is pretty funny especially one of the dates they construct. There is a lot going on for a small book, but since this is a series everything we learn usually appears useful in another story. The resolution is a bit simplistic in its complexity in it assumes that people do not really pay attention which I find in crime not to be true, but the mystery works here in Morelville.
