On a barrier island off the coast of New Jersey, sixteen-year-old Dough is surprised when her long-distance boyfriend returns after four years and still finds her beautiful, despite her seventy-pound weight gain.

The premise was interesting, but the execution wasn't up to par. I didn't really feel any emotional investment in the characters. Christian was okay, and I wish the chemistry between him and Dough was explored further.
I don't understand the negative reviews on this book, I thought it was great. I actually laughed out loud several times! Gwen is a likeable character, and I went into this completely unaware of what it was about. I just thought it was a love story. Then the star power stuff happened and I thought it added a nice touch of paranormal to an otherwise great story.
A disclaimer: I grew up on a island off the coast of Jersey that sounded just like Gwen's, so I think I connected with the book right away.
Also, I think I might have tossed Wish into sea and kept Christian, but that is me.
The only reason this is not five stars is that Gwen's self depreciating manner got on my nerves after awhile. I get it, she's big, but Gwen thinks she is gross, and the reader gets to hear about it over and over again-even though it clearly is not how the rest of the characters (that matter) see her. I just wanted to give her a hug.
I can't wait to read more by Balog!
