When I was a kid I got this book somewhere, I think as a prize in the local library's summer reading programme. You had to read and write about 10 books over the summer and then you got to choose a book. To my disappointment you could only get 2 prizes in one summer. In hindsight it makes sense - would have cleaned them out.
Anyway, I LOVED this book and read it multiple times. I still have it, and I've read it a couple of times as an adult, for the nostalgia. Today, for the first time, I read it in its original English which felt a bit weird. ;) Anyway, it's an atmospheric read, I've always liked Laura and Jacko, and Carmody Braque is a pretty scary villain.
Strangely, I've never read anything else by Margaret Mahy...

A powerful book.
