The Devil's Work by Mark Edwards

After spending the last four years at home raising her daughter, Sophie Greenwood lands her dream job at Jackdaw Books, but some problems start on the very first day and it seems as if someone is sabotoging both her work and her life at home.

This book is difficult to rate. I had a hard time trying to connect with Sophie. She was not a very relatable character, and that was the reason I wanted to stop reading. Also, the pace was very slow at the beginning, but at the 80%, the story became surprisingly good. I had my theories about the villain, but the book surprised me with a complicated turn of events.

Just...a very weak mystery. I really didn't like it. Not much happened and then when it did I just wasn't super into it.

This was a perfect poolside book. This maybe sounds like an insult, but it was exactly what I was looking for in a summer read: a compelling page-turner to accompany my chlorine-and-sunscreen scented surroundings.

The twists and turns weren't as twisty-and-turny as I would have liked, and the ending gets a little silly, but the setting and themes - office politics, the world of publishing, maintaining a relationship with your family while trying to fulfill your own passions - these all worked well, and just enough crazy happens to keep you invested. 3.5/5
