Ya know...if the character relationships were fleshed out a bit more, I would've rated this a solid 3 or 4 stars (damn good ratings in my opinion). Sadly, I just really couldn't connect with the characters on an individual basis AND a friendship basis, which made the plot fall short for me. I'm huge into believable and developed characters, so when a book is lacking in that department, I struggle with it. Too bad, because the plot, overall, was pretty neat.
A lot of people don’t like this book but personally I loved it. At parts this book can be a little bit scary so I would suggest this for ages 12 and up. But if your child gets scared easily this book might not be for them. The ending of the book did feel a little abrupt to me, but it was still good. The middle of the book really starts to captivate you and makes you want to keep reading so it’s an easy book to get through in my opinion.
I usually love camp settings, especially ones that are supposed to be creepy. The Lake is a YA Thriller that had some fun moments, but overall was disappointing. It took me a few chapters before I really got into the flow of the writing. Once I did, I finished this one quickly.
Pretty early on, the author makes it clear who the villain is. Sometimes that can work for a story, but it didn't fit well with this one. At least not for me. It was a bit clunky and the characters read more like junior high than teens.
Esme and Kayla especially irked me. Their friendship was very lopsided, instead of being endearing. I'm honestly not sure where the author meant to go with them.
The ending also felt rushed. It just stopped and came across as unfinished. Sadly, this just wasn't for me.
