A very cute book that packs some scares. I enjoyed this book. I like that the stories are brief and to the point, perfect for a quick chill. Out of all the stories, I found 2, maybe 3 that fell flat. Maybe I didn't get the idea behind the story but either way the others made up for it. On a side note, this book is beautiful and the cover is a nice add to my collection.
Some I liked/loved, rest were misses for me. Obviously subjective because what I enjoy in horror could be exact opposite of what someone else prefers so overall I'd say pick this collection up. Here were MY favs:
Rearview by Samantha Hung
Grimalkin by Andrew F Sullivan
Unbeknownst by Matthew Vollmer
Lone by Jac Jemc
Candy Boii by Sam J Miller
The Marriage Variations by Monique Laban
Carbon Footprint by Shelly Oria
Human Milk for Human Babies by Lindsay King-Miller
In my opinion, the book was okay. Though it did get better as I kept reading, I was expecting more considering the number of authors who took part in writing it.
Part 4 had some really impressive stories, but there were also quite a few that didn't quite meet my expectations. The story on race and the culture of hookup apps left me gagged and gooped. Nevertheless, there were a handful of standout stories that left me craving more from those authors just not enough to warrant more than a 2.5-star review rounded up to 3 because the book cover is sexy.
This is a great little collection. There really isn't a”bad” story, I mean, honestly, they are too short to become bad. What this is great for is finding new authors. In the same way you order a flight and try craft beers, here you get a bite-sized story to see if you gel with an author's writing style.
For my own benefit, I just want to list some of my stand-out faves:
Jane Death Theory #13 by Scott should be required reading for everyone
Lone by Jac Jemc scared the shit out of me and is still scaring me a week after reading it
The Unhaunting by Nguyen is genius
Pincer and Tongue by Jones- the man is a marvel
Caravan by Iniguez was so, so good
I wrote down some of the authors that impressed me. Some of them, I had forgotten about (like I 5 star raved about one of Ben Loory's collections awhile back) and some of them have novels coming out soon.
