I have absolutely no clue how this book has such a high rating. This is the first of Armentrout's novels that I've ever tried to sit through before and, boy, I wish I hadn't bothered. I'm not sure how, but I went into this book with almost no expectations and, somehow, have managed to find myself disappointed.
The plot is completely predictable. I, and probably countless other readers, had caught on to what was happening long before the protagonist did, and the protagonist suffers for it – coming across as far more naive and unintelligent than she's meant to. I get she's meant to be this sheltered girl, but when she's constantly being called smart... where? Show me where she's being smart! Give me some intelligence! Or, at the very least, find a way of working out the reveals naturally. There are interesting ways to let the reader know more than the protagonist while still making the protagonist look smart for figuring it out.
The romance is bad. Which is bad. It's bad because the romance is the main focus of the book. Again, what with the predictable plots, you pick up pretty quickly where this is going to go. I think it's pretty creepy, the whole 18-year-old virgin and Older Man giving her her sexual awakening thing, but whatever floats your boat.
Aside from that, I spotted a bunch of typos in the book that just lessened my enjoyment each time. It felt like there was absolutely no effort in putting this book together. Especially with the world-building. Or, should I say, WHAT worldbuilding?
I read this book simply out of a desire for a book to read. I needed something new, refreshing, instead of cycling through the same authors I usually end up gravitating towards. I certainly found a book. It wasn't anything new or refreshing, but it was definitely a book.
TL;DR: this? This ain't it, chief.
