I hated this. First and foremost, this is not a body positive novel. The whole book we get nothing but body shaming from the main character about herself. Most scenes randomly include descriptions of her body like describing body rolls while she’s driving or in the middle of conversations. I understand struggling with body positivity but thinking about your size every minute and turning every conversation to this is so toxic. This isn’t brining up and discussing a hard subject it’s falling right into an unhealthy mindset and staying there.
Also, they treat the character Hope (one of the sisters) like shit. She has diabetes and takes a drug to help with this that is also known for weight loss. She does lose weight and the whole sister group cuts her out of the main group chat and make snide comments. This is the worse way to talk about needing help. The whole family is terrible. They talk shit about each others weight and are the least supportive people. For some reason, the family is religious and makes such nasty comments about the divorce. The mother is the worst person ripping on her own children and loving the ex-husband more.
The romance part of the book was good at first as the love interest was so good. He was caring and although he was immature about weight differences years ago, he showed real change. Then out of nowhere the author has them break up in such a stupid way just for her to get back with the sort of ex-husband. The rest of the book is the main character talking themself back into the relationship.
The ex-husband is as rich in personality as cardboard is in taste. He just does whatever she says, no opinion. The ex-part of husband is not real. There's not even a separation agreement. The caricature of the main character in her ex-husbands work is bad and not addressed. It’s a huge part of the book and we see how badly it affects her. Despite this there is no real talk between them about this, and it’s brushed under the rug.
