When I got this book I was unsure about it because I thought it was ‘just' a YA book, an easy going YA thriller that would have a few horror elements but be cheesy and fluffy.
Oh my god how wrong was I!?
It started off slow, the easy build up of the plot, the introduction of the characters, the interplay between them and the main plot flowed well until suddenly, all hell broke loose! it went from 20 to 100 real fucking quickly and I loved every minute of it!! I originally got this through NetGalley but very quickly listened to the audiobook and got it as a physical copy, I needed this in my life and needed it in as many formats as I could possibly get!
I absolutely loved the setting (maps always get me excited!), the fact that it was in a theme park dedicated to the ‘horror' genre with different sections about different areas really drew me in, haunted vehicles, an asylum, a prison etc had me hooked. The onset of extreme violence was very well placed, it was at an unexpected yet crucial part of the story, it both shocked and moved the story on in a way that was comfortable yet horrific, it set the tone for the rest of the story and kept me on edge yet engaged throughout.
Absolutely LOVED this book, it is one I will go back to time and again and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series! It better be a series! A duology would suit me fine but I absolutely definitely need more, it is so good!!!
Huge thanks to Duncan Ralston, Victory NetGalley Editing Co-op and Shadow Work Publishing for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own
While reading this I took 16 pages of notes, 16!! 95% of it is spoilery and the other 5% seems to be the application pack questions because my brain decided I needed to have the entire list of questions. I still don't know why.
Set Then and Now we follow both Emma (then) and Laura (now), both of them have suffered recent horrible situations and believe that living in this house will be a cathartic experience, this house, of course, being One Folgate Street, the brain-child of Edward Monkford who has final approval on who should live in the house.
Now however much I enjoyed this and the mystery aspect I have to say that I was not a fan of Emma, as you read it you will see why I started to dislike her and I was not a fan of Edward either. Laura was more of a sympathetic character and I got behind her and enjoyed her part in it.
There are secrets, lots of lying liars and some sexy times (which helped move the story along and gave some insight into the minds of the main players).
So all in all a solid 4 star book, I had rated it a 5 but changed it when writing this as i'd read through my notes again and felt it deserved a slightly lower rating.
Huge thanks to J.P. Delaney, Quercus Books and NetGalley for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own
I love this book! I've read it over the past couple of weeks, dipping in and out of it, savouring it.
Michael Booth, along with his wife Lissen and their 2 children Asger and Emil, travel around Japan to see why it's the preeminent food nation on earth, along the way they try every food available and see how Japanese food should be prepared, cooked and eaten and see how their diet can be improved by learning from the Japanese.
Meeting Sumos, Ninja Warriors, the Ama divers, huge crabs and having more adventures as they eat their way across the country sounds like such an amazing experience and makes me want to visit Japan even more than I did before!
I will reread this over and over again and will be searching for Japanese cookbooks to try and change my diet and live a healthier life.
Huge thanks to Michael Booth, Macmillan-Picador and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review
