That last 200 pages was unputdownable!
A lot of reveals were executed nicely, even if they were hiding under your nose. The Dyvoks were terrifying, and their brutal punishments were difficult to read. Two unreliable narrators also added to the story's suspense, particularly in the final section. Surely there will be a book 3 and I want to witness more epicness in the empire of the damned.
I'm satisified with the ending and it creates potential for new stories within this world like flintlock fantasy or horror stories.
My only major gripe is it feels like there's too much lore for the final book of the trilogy where it should have been introduced in the previous books.
Lots of disturbing scenes and detailed description of violence. Definitely a page turner on the last 40% of the book. Final scenes will make you emotional if you're invested with the main and side characters.
Books 1>3>2 is my ranking and will definitely read future books of the author.
Not for everyone, including me... I think. This series is intimidating to read but overall I had a relaxing and fun time reading various chapters in this volume. There is a variety of knowledge on other continents, kings and rulers, history, and culture that will pique your interest in reading the next volumes. Might try the audiobook format and see if it's worth continuing.
The writing is top-notch and I'm amazed by the scope of the story. A lot happened with Hadrian considering it's the first book and some big moments made me root for him as the main character. It didn't give me enough punch emotionally especially at the end to give it a 5 stars. Once I know the background story of the Cielcins maybe it will make more sense.
I'm sure on rereading it I will like it more once I connect the dots and I'm more invested in the background characters and their agendas.
The jurisprudence being used to solve the mystery is interesting to read and relatable. The fantasy aspects including necromancy and the horror factor caught me in, and the action itself was dark, stressful, and nasty which I enjoyed. The writing was easy to get through and the epigraph is chef's kiss.
