Legitimately one of my favourite books from 40k so far (I've done about 7 books of Horus Heresy by this point), my daughter got into 40k night time stories because of it (I censor where I need to don't worry).
Lore wise, it opens up alot about what could still be out there (from DoaT). What sentient tech is out there, trying to make a life for it self or secretly making a better life for others. The background of _Spirit of Eternity_ as well, just great and realistic to the setting. It's grieving and just wants to get away from what the descendants of the humanity it once knew and loved. Heart breaking.
The other characters are also great too, it just pokes at so much wider lore that I'm excited to get into.
A marine who just wants to save a man he sees as a father figure.
Another at the start of a journey to reveal the deepest secret of his chapter. A journey which is his end.
A magos who will do anything for fame.
And of course, bug slaying mayhem. Sweet.
