While this book is well written, not much of a story or plot is developed. Instead this book is chock full of introductions of species, why they have feathers, who doesn't like molting, pirates with starving kids, etc. Talk, talk, talk, endless chatting about scales, why someone became a chef, the differences between egg-mates and nest-mates, and so on. This book was one of those rare ones where I could not wait for it to end.

This installment scores a 48 on the Shriek scale, meaning there are 48 uses of that word or a form of that word within these pages. To me, that's too many but read on adventurer. Your quest awaits!

I'd nearly given up on this series given the writing style and story that seems stretched over far too many volumes. However I wanted to finish this book just to have it completed. now I'm glad I did as the story took a huge turn and is now suddenly interesting again! Yes, this means I'll be moving on to volume 12. 17 total volumes in the series so I may make it to the end yet!

I'm still hopeful to never read the word shriek again. Hope also looks to encounter no more alliterations of amazement at things that are bigger, better, worse, more terrifying, louder, thunderous, etc. than anything a character has ever seen, heard or experienced before in their life. That turn of phrase is getting a little tired.

Good enough to take on Book 2 in the series.

My kind of sci-fi! Such a good book and a strong set of characters.

Why do I keep reading this series? The writing is awful and the story plodding. There's just enough of a story there and a guaranteed cliffhanger at the end of each volume that hooks me in to start the next one. This was vol 10 of 17 so....

I'd not read a “steam punk” novel before but I'm glad I finally took the plunge. Great book, fresh world building and story line, unlike anything I've read before. Looking forward to Book 2 “Lifemaker” in this 5 book series.

Gruesome at times but a fascinating and fresh story and plot. Just when you think the author is starting to wander, his machinations reveal themselves in a way that made my jaw drop. Not for everyone but a great read for fans of dark fantasy.

Another interesting chapter in this book series, here we learn more about the nature of the Outsiders and the city-dwellers. Interesting, would love to read a full-length novel based on the broader back story of this universe. On to book #4!

Getting interested to know more about this setting, how the world got into this state. On to book 3!

Horrible. Not an interesting story in the least. Here's hoping the rest of the Commonwealth Saga is more interesting than this sex-obsessed and repetitive prequel.

Very entertaining take on the superhero genre.

The story started out interesting but then turned into just another boring crime story. Could not force myself to finish this book.

Fascinating and original sci-fi, loved it.

Not a bad installment, added many interesting areas to the map, including the bottom of the canyon that surrounds the Sorcerer's Ring. On to book #9!

One of my favorite types of story, akin to the Coyote novel series. Very short but a well told story.

Meh, it was alright, even laugh out loud funny at times, but it's fairly short and never achieved that epic feel that many sci-fi books manage to find. This is a forced pander for LOLs, not space opera. Enjoy it for what it is, but then by all means read some Evan Currie.

Did NOT see that ending coming, it almost made up for the poor writing. On to book 7!

Not as good as the first book in this series but it ended on an intriguing note, one that will bring me back for book 3 at some point.

Great retelling of an AT trail through hike. I think what fascinated me most was the recurring updates of other hikers that he met and re-set along the way, as well as the feel the reader gets for just how physically difficult this hike is. It's not something everyone can do, and taking the hike vicariously as a rapt reader I feel like I've lived part of the experience.

A worthy sequel to Hounded. I like the fresh story and the roots in Celtic lore. Very entertaining too, found myself laughing out loud several times. Looking forward to book 3.

This series remains consistently well-written and thought provoking, really enjoying this sequel series to The Lost Fleet. Humor plays a slightly larger role in this installment, found myself laughing out loud several times. On too book 4!
