I love this topic and was excited to read this account by Pulitzer Prize winning author Stacy Schiff...but what a slog to get through! Almost 7 months to get through this mess! A disjointed, confusing and sleep-inducing read. So many characters that are practically indistinguishable from one another that I found myself constantly referencing the “Cast of Characters” list that the author kindly provides...mostly out of necessity, I would presume.
The lack of any sort of linear storyline for these people makes it extremely difficult to follow at times. It's as if she threw all the names into one of those Bingo cages, and whichever name was called, that would be the one she would write about.
In short, an overly long and labored account with some interesting moments here and there. On the plus side, I was highly amused by the name of one of the individuals involved. A name you just couldn't make up:
Dorcas Hoar.
Im still laughing.
If you can overlook the pretentiousness and the constant reminder that he went to Yale, this is a pretty interesting book. Personally, I was hoping for more behind the scenes with legendary performers. Those stories however (stories of Ali, Jonathan Winters, Johnny Carson, and my favorite, Stan Laurel) are wholly entertaining. Just wish there were more.
Detailed account of the murder of Hollywood director William Desmond Taylor. Author William Mann leaves no stone unturned as he examines in great detail the players involved in this unsolved case (yet he definitely names the most likely culprit)! An intimate and fascinating account of Hollywood in it's infancy. If you're a classic film fan...you won't be dissapointed.
I know, I know...I'm in the minority on this one.
Right from the start the gimmick of putting the reader in the shoes of the main character was off-putting, not to mention odd. Then there was the strange syntax. Couple that with characters you hear about but never meet, a muddled geography of the town and other towns nearby...all of it just left me not caring very much for the story or our main protagonist.
I love Joan Rivers and I'm sad that she's no longer with us.
But this book is awful...actually, this audio book is awful.
I only made til March in her “diary” before I called it quits.
And I NEVER quit a book.
If you like recycled jokes and outdated pop references (Sunny Von Bulow...Nancy Kerrigan...Monica Lewinsky) then this book may be for you.
For the record, nothing really offends me...I get this type of humor and like it...but not when it's not funny. 2 jokes about JFK getting his head blown off...really?
Fascinating look at the relationship between the US and various Zionist organizations and the lengths they went to in order for Israel to become a reality. Some of the info in here is jaw dropping and it's amazing how much we don't know about what went on behind the scenes. The book is meticulously researched, so much so that weblinks and citations makeup half the book. This book is well worth the read for those who want to know the full story about the creation of Israel.
If you're like me and you've finished both seasons of OITNB and are craving more...then you too might be disappointed after reading the book on which the show is based. While it's an entertaining and insightful incrimination of our penal system, it's hardly filled with the drama and chaos that unfolds in the show. In fact, the book is so different from the show, that even some of the names of the beloved characters from the show are different from the ones in the book. So if you are looking for more info about your favorite characters from the show, you won't find it in this book.
But you will find an interesting, humorous and entertaining memoir.
From “Video Killed The Radio Star” to “Jersey Shore” ...a nostalgic look back at a channel that impacted our culture. This book contains interviews with hundreds of executives, rock stars, Vjays and others associated with MTV. A fun book that takes an in depth look at what went on behind the scenes. It was fun going to YouTube and watching some of these old videos knowing what I know now.
I listened to the audiobook and unlike LIVE FROM NY this was narrated by ONE guy who did all the voices...including the female ones. So it was a bit disjointed going from one interview to the next with the same narrator. Not sure why they couldn't spring for a female narrator just to break it up. Cheap bastards!
If you are a fan of the show and are longing for more now that the season is done...look no further. I was hesitant at first for I like my fiction slightly highbrow...but this was popcorn reading at its best (I actually ate popcorn while finishing it...just sayin'). This book is a page turner! On to the next one....
