Surprisingly deep emotional journey
Too few pew-pew / YA romps like this utterly-accessible joy-of-a-book actually delve into mental health, emotional well-being, and adulthood so well.
I feel like I learned things from these characters. Didn't see that coming. The first couple books in this series were cute, but not startlingly good — but this one definitely took a turn into deep topics.

Every woman, a damsel
Even as a guy — even reading a book that's, admittedly, more than a decade old — this came across as entirely too misogynist for me to handle.
Perhaps people who can separate the privilege from the prose better than I, or without a social axe to grind, will enjoy this more; but i definitely can't recommend it, despite its status as a classic of modern fantasy.
