Feast Your Eyes

Haunting. So intense. Ambitious AF in scope and technique, and for the most part Goldberg pulls it off. Impressive.

Impossible to describe, at least for me. I'd call it a heads-on exploration of obsession and its costs. A strong commitment, to art, freedom, political expression, is how we make the world a better place; it also takes a toll on us and those we love. Is it worth it? Do we have a choice?

The narrative gimmick is effective: the different voices are unique, consistent, and memorable. This is an it-gets-better book: even though it starts off strong, there were moments when I wasn't sure it would work. It did, and I dare say your perseverance will be rewarded.

Two personal notes: first, what an unexpected counterpart to Heart the Lover , my book just before this! That one about connection, this one with so much loneliness. Second, in high school I was heavily into photography: camera everywhere, hours in the darkroom. So it's possible that this book speaks to me in ways it won't to everyone.
