I forced myself to finish this.
This series is a jumble of decent and okay plot and fantasy mixed with extremely immature character interactions, dialogue, and internal monologue. Some stuff just also doesn't make sense.
I think from about 60% to 75% range of this book I wanted to dnf but im trying not to dnf asmuch anymore. I instead sped up my audiobook to 2x and it did get a bit better or at least tolerable later. The dragons and the action save it for me and some of the more intense consequences of war or people's actions.
Half the books could've been taken out either for either being annoying or cringe ... or because a whole lot of nothing was happening in a whole lot of pages. Some plot points were drawn out too long. I ended up zoning out. Came back in when the characters stopped sounding like trashy high schoolers.
Too each their own but I don't understand the raving of this series so far and all the 5 stars.
Oof.
I was thoroughly entertained and will keep reading the series. But, of course I was entertained, this book is so reminiscent of Divergent, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and more.
I wanted an easy read in high fantasy to help get back into a reading flow and this fits that.
However, Im deducting for the over done copy cat feeling from other books and also for the extremely annoying way the romance is done in this book. It's very unfortunate you already can't find many new, adult fantasies with fmcs without romance being a huge subplot but this one is cringe. It feels more YA/obsessive crush level descriptions than... adults.
I'm hoping it dies down and the world expands with more originality in next book.
If you don't finish it quickly or aren't firm that your life is fine and you're happy then I wouldn't recommend reading it because it could drain you and make you resentful of your circumstances. I think it could be relatable to mom's but it's also just got too weird bits two the end and seems to accept/allow some poor behavior or path to finding help. I wouldn't recommend most of this moms path to healing to anyone so I have a hard time saying the book is really any good. Sometimes funny and can be relatable though so for that it gets some stars.
