Beneath the Hood by Emily McIntire

Series: Sugar Lake, Book 3

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5

Emily McIntire has done it again. As someone who has read nearly everything she’s written, I can confidently say she is in my top three favorite authors. She is so versatile—she isn't just "one type" of writer, and the Sugar Lake series is the perfect example of her range.

The Story

This third and final installment brings us back to the world we fell for in the first two books, but this time the spotlight is on Blakely and Jackson. Watching their journey was nothing short of magical.

Jackson’s character arc was easily my favorite part of the story. Seeing him transition from a rugged "f-boy" type into the ultimate "golden retriever" hero was so rewarding. He and Blakely complement each other in the best ways, filling the voids they’ve both carried throughout their lives.

What I Loved

The Emotional Connection: There is a beautiful healing dynamic here. Watching Jackson help Blakely mend parts of herself she didn't even realize were damaged was incredibly moving.

The Legacy: Seeing Blakely fill the void left by Lee from the previous books brought the whole series full circle.

The Tension: I’ll admit, I spent a good portion of this book holding my breath! I was so invested in them that I was terrified something would happen to ruin their wholesome, sweet connection.

The Spice

I’d rate the spice a 2 out of 5. There is definitely heat, but it’s perfectly balanced. It’s just enough to make the passion and the love story ignite without ever making you lose sight of the plot.

Final Verdict

I’m giving this a 4-star rating—it was a fantastic, feel-good romance, but it didn't quite make me cry, which is my personal bar for a full 5 stars! Still, if you haven’t started an Emily McIntire book yet, consider this your sign to dive in.

I’m officially down to my very last unread book of hers, and I’m already sad for it to end!

🏀Just finished Beneath the Stands, the second book in Emily McIntire’s Sugar Lake series, and I am officially obsessed. After devouring her Never After series (which is low-key one of my favorite things I’ve ever read, period), I went into this hoping for the best, and it totally delivered.

🏀This series is honestly the cutest. If you’re looking for spice, I’d say it’s a solid 1.5 to 2 stars—it’s not totally over the top, but the writing is so well-done and the emotional hits are heavy. My feelings have been all over the place! I’m sitting here now trying to decide if I liked this one or the first book better, and it’s a toss-up. Emily McIntire is easily one of my all-time favorite authors; at this point, I will read (or listen to!) literally anything she puts out.

🏀Speaking of listening, I’ve been doing the audiobooks for these and the narration is 10/10. Absolute perfection. 🎧

🏀The dynamic between Becca and Eli? Phenomenal. I am such a sucker for the best friend’s brother trope, and their push-and-pull is just... chef’s kiss. They both bring that total Alpha energy to the table—you’ve got the grumpy girl vs. the sarcastic male, and the chemistry is just electric. I also love how seamlessly this ties back into book one; the timelines are so easy to follow, which makes the world-building feel really cohesive.

🩷If you need something to pull you out of a reading funk, this is it. I’m officially a Sugar Lake stan!

. If you love a second-chance romance that actually makes you swoon while simultaneously breaking your heart, Emily McIntire really delivered with this one. The back-and-forth between the characters felt so real—it was unpredictable, messy, and just so full of soul.

I ended up listening to the audiobook, and let me tell you, the narration was absolute perfection. Being a Southern girl with a deep accent myself, I can be pretty picky about how we’re represented in audio, but they nailed it! It made the whole story feel so much more like home.

What really got me, though, was how well the story handled the heavy stuff. The way addiction was woven into the plot and how it affects an entire family was written with so much heart. It wasn't just a romance; it felt like a real look at life and the "entanglements" we all navigate.

I am so ready to dive into the rest of the Sugarlake series now. I love that these can be read as standalones but are still so beautifully intertwined. If you’ve been feeling stuck in a reading rut lately, please run and grab this one!

I need to know—what is the one trope that ALWAYS pulls you out of a reading slump? Is it second chances, or are you more of an enemies-to-lovers fan? Let’s chat in the comments! 👇

If you want an ending that’ll literally leave you staring at a wall in silence, this is it. Madeline Taylor really went for the throat with this one. We’ve got a Shadow Daddy Reaper whose touch is lethal (yes, please) and a wraith FMC who is every bit as powerful as she is ethereal. It’s the ultimate "touch her and you’re deleted" trope. This is fast-paced, spicy, and basically a Romantasy fever dream that won't let go. 10/10 would let this book put me in a chokehold again

I am officially a Lexi Davis superfan! I devoured this book in one sitting, and it was exactly what my soul needed. Lately, I’ve been struggling with a bit of a depression fog that has made it difficult to focus on full-length novels, but the fast-paced, high-energy writing of this story brought me right back to life.

🍀 The way these characters grew up together was written with such beauty and care. It felt like the ultimate "friends-to-lovers" journey.

🍀 I was holding my breath and rooting for them the entire time. When they finally kissed? Pure magic. I couldn’t stop smiling.

💚 I love how Lexi writes around holiday themes; it adds a specific "spark" and cozy atmosphere that makes the romance feel even more special.

🍀 Final Thoughts

Lexi Davis has become an all-time favorite author for me. This wasn't just a feel-good romance; it was a "did-my-soul-good" romance. If you need a story that is quick, beautifully written, and packed with all the feels, do not pass this up. I will be reading every single thing she writes from now on!
