Sometimes simple, sometimes bizarre. You like you're reading about a dream, or a dream within a dream.
I was very intrigued, albeit slightly confused, while reading the book. The various characters, settings, and periods appeared to be completely unrelated to each other, but with some serious digging the reader will begin to see where the connections can be found, with an explosive finale that got me from “what the heck am I reading” to “WHOA what next???” in the space of just 50 pages or so.
Depending on the chapter, The Three-Body Problem can feel like historical fiction, a crime thriller, or a science-fiction smorgasbord. As the first of a trilogy, the book makes a serious effort to slowly build background, history, and context that I can only assume will make the next two volumes that much richer. It felt underwhelming and confusing for me at first, but it was well worth it once I reached the third act.
My advice would be to be patient while reading, enjoy the different settings, and trust in the author to make sense of everything for you towards the end. Have fun!
