An amazing debut YA novel that handles difficult issues (including hate crimes, bullying) with sensitivity and authenticity. Loved the geeky humor throughout! Loved the main character's superhero comics, and that the superhero refuses to fight hatred with hatred. Loved how the friendships progress throughout the book, and how the main character develops. Just LOVED.

Recently finished Lena Coakley's new YA novel, WORLDS OF INK AND SHADOW. Wow. If you're a fan of any of the Brontës, you need to read this. I love the blend of researched biography and fantastical elements, also love the horror elements that start creeping in. Also, as soon as I finished the book I was immediately compelled to go online and found out more about the history of the Brontës.
HIGHLY recommended.

Written by Karen Krossing and illustrated by Julia Vasileva, ONE COSMIC ROCK takes a hugely important event in Earth's history (the asteroid impact 66 million years ago) and makes it interesting and accessible to young readers. Big concepts are broken down in a way that feels manageable without talking down to young readers. The illustrator's art is bright, colorful, and full of energy. Older readers will also appreciate the bonus info in the author's note at the end as well as a glossay of “words to know” and selected sources. I also love how the ending brings the reader back to their own place on the planet, and a reminder of the resilience of human life, “even during great hardship.”

This would be a great addition to any classroom or school library collection, as well as an excellent gift for curious young readers. I also highly recommend the companion book, ONE TINY BUBBLE: The Story Of Our Last Universal Common Ancestor.

Delicious, evocative language. I found myself slowing down so I could savour the lyrical voice. I loved everything about this book, and found myself thinking about it long after I finished reading.
