This may be the first series I've ever completed and what a journey it has been.
While unlikely to be my favourite series of all time, its for sure had some of my faveourite moments.
Shadows Upon Time easily provides one of my top 3 being the escape of Danu, very Event Horizon!
This book also gave me my favourite beginning of the entire series, by now I'm used to the time jumps but puzzling the pieces back together through different perspectives was extremely refreshing and overall a welcome change.
It's amazing to see the character growth since Empire of Silence - simply fantatic writing, each book felt a subtle change but the difference from start to end is vast. The relationship and interaction between Hadiran and the Emporer in this book is also sublime.
My gripes with the book lie in the ending, and this may feel extremely harsh due to how it's drilled into us from the opening of book one and through little snippets throughout the series.
The story of The Sun Eater has always been the journey but when the destination for so many of our characters is more hardship it hardly felt satisfing, I mean what did Selene do to Ruocchio, she deserved so much more. I would have also liked to have seen a more fitting farewell for Lorian rather than the departure he had while Cassandra and A2 felt more like characters to provide only added to create the 'Abba, take me with you' and 'No' back and forth in each combat.
The Prince's petulance and performance at the end are near on perfect as well but seeing his handler, Yod, at the end was one too many fake deaths for me and raised more questions.
It feels like we must finish the stories for some of these side characters ourselves who are sent off at the end or perhaps we will see new novels following different perspectives in the aftermath of The Sun Eater.
The series is great and albeit some pacing issues and the start of each book being jarring at times, each ended with me wanting to dive into the next and would recommend the series.
All I had wanted was to see Alexander's smug grin removed at the end!
Always forward, always down. Never left, nor right.
