It's interesting but verbose. Would have liked the books version of the first pass of Bronson Alpha to be in the movie. Think of the section of the movie 2012 including the destruction of LA and the eruption of Yellowstone but world wide and all at once.
That was the only good part of 2012.
Anyways there are a lot of differences so if you had seen the movie, this is still worth reading.
A lot of the speeches and conversations are tediously long, but worth the effort.
Right after this I am reading the sequel.
This has a pretty bad example of how Danny never learns. He is told that he mustn't touch something but figures it's OK if he gets somebody else to touch it. I think even the 10 year olds this was aimed at would see that that is not OK.
Even after something bad happens because he (anf his friends) misused a device the Professor made,
they do it again.
The science in this one is more silly than science.
Not my favorite.
A classic from the old days. It's set on a planet that has the culture and laws of the mythical Old West of the USA.
Lots of pretty interesting discussion of what it means to be intelligent.
The native beings on this planet are pretty well thought out but a lot of the humans are interchangeable.
I recommend it.
Horrid book. Couldn't even get half way. I'm surprised I got that far. Near the beginning, Flashman beats his father's mistress because she won't have sex with him. It doesn't get better after that. This was recommended to me by a woman acquaintance and now I wonder what I said to make her think I would like this.
Back in the 1970s there was a bunch of interest in the idea that there might be a dinosaur in the Central African jungles. This book refers to that but stays on the science side. It is pretty relatable even today. Unlike some kids books from the kind, it has a pretty respectful view of the indigenous peoples there.
This is what I expected from a early 1900s super science adventure. The offer predicts quick travel to Mars and Venus but socially it's stuck in 1930. Women are just eye candy and the space ships have chart rooms and lookouts like you would expect on old ocean going ships.
It's a little long but if you want to get a feel for what SF was like a long time ago, give it a read. It's available on Gutenberg.
