This one is very campy, and definitely had some moments where I was laughing at the silliness of it all but I did really enjoy reading this book. It was a lot of fun and one that I kept picking up wanting to finish. I like the overall idea and think it was done well, I think it has a little room to be a tad bit longer to help flesh out the main character and give her a little more emotion but still think if you love campy horror and final girls you will love this.
This books isn't fast it's an incredibly slow burn but it builds the tension so well, and I enjoyed it. Though at some places it did drag a little and took me longer to read than I was expecting. The characters were great for the most part flawed but they feel real even when unlikable. I love story that takes place in basically one setting, and this one did a great job not feeling to stale. 4.5 rounded up for Goodreads
I liked the idea of this book I think more than the execution. Not all the stories were equal and I found it hard to get through some of them. And the over all message was pretty heavy handed especially at the end. But I did enjoy some of the stories enough that I can't say it isn't worth a read, just a bit of slow one.
Okay, so the beginning of this books gets like 4 or a 5, but the end just kind dropped it, the finally reveal didn't really feel like it made sense with the character we follow. In the end I was confused about the main characters thoughts throughout the book once I got there. The writing is fine and the characters were enjoyable just seems like the main character is aware she is in a mystery and can't let the reader know stuff. Rounding down to a 3 but closer to a 3.5
Really enjoying these books so far, they are well written, the characters are complex and I feel like the author did a good job in how the povs were split. The world is so interesting and I wanted to keep reading about, the only thing I wish was different was that it was longer as I could easily spend a good 300+ pages on this world. And the way the previous book and this one play off each other is very smart, making sense of the last one while priming you and exciting you for the next one.
so while this isn't perfect necessarily it is 5 star for the enjoyment I got out of it. Feels like you like typical sci-fi infection story but that's great as I love those stories. The characters were great and though maybe not the most complex due to the shortness of the book they felt real and flawed but still enjoyable to read about. Excited to read the rest of the series.
Honestly I haven't been this excited to finish a book in a while, probably should have dnf'd it but I struggle to do that, and so struggled through this book.
First it could have been much shorter, it being so long allowed for it to get weirdly convoluted, this thing had way to much going on, the cosmic horror angle was way too much and I felt my eyes rolling into the back of my head by the 70% mark.
The characters are all the worst and not even in a fun way, and one of them it comes out of nowhere and was a terrible surprise. Even the main character is unlikable and annoying which is ironic considering how much she judges other people. I wish we had some people to root for even one, in the end I didn't care about who died giving their death little impact outside of the gore.
The gore was there but the atmosphere wasn't, and the stakes were none existent until maybe the very last page but I was so over it by then that I just didn't care.
Giving it a 2 because even though I didn't like it for the most part the beginning wasn't the worst and only one of the characters truly made me hate them at that point, it had promise then they got to the island. And I liked the way it was written even if what was written I didn't enjoy as much.
I think I'll give this author another shot and hope his other books make a bit more sense.
I loved the beginning of this book and the end, at first I thought it was going to be like a supernatural Jurassic Park, but then in the middle it got more complicated. At first when the origins of the forest is starting to be explained I didn't really buy into it and was disappointed, but by the end it had pulled me back in and I enjoyed it, especially how quickly it passed between characters creating a sense of urgency in the final action sequences. The books was written really well, the characters were enjoyable, and setting was amazing. I think if I hadn't had the expectation that I did I would have enjoyed it much more so just be aware of that and I think you'll enjoy it. Not a masterpiece but fun slasher book.
Do be warned there is quite a lot of female objectification, which was not enjoyable. 3.5/5 rounded up for Goodreads.
Even though a lot of the plot is fairly obvious I still loved this book, the pacing was good, the sci-fi elements were very approachable yet interesting. Though the characters weren't really special in any way they still enjoyable to read about. Was super excited every time I picked it up to find out what happened next even when I had a good idea about what was going to happen. Definitely suggest this to horror fans especially those who love sci-fi.
I love this book's approach on the climate change and capitalism issues that we face, it was very unique and
I found myself highlighting many of great quotes that I felt spoke to real world situations. The characters were interesting though some I enjoyed reading about than others. The only thing that leaves me to review it 4 instead of 5 is the end, didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of the read and found it went really fast in some sections. But definitely a must a read!
This book has some really good moments, most of the stories did hook me however they all left me wanting more and had a two sentence horror story feel, where I could see a good idea surfacing but not enough in how it was done. Though for transparency it could be that shorter stories aren't for me and those who love shorter stories might love this.
What a cool story, it's was the perfect length which made it exciting but to the point no scenes felt empty or unneeded, felt like every scene added to the story. The characters were all great and the setting was spooky and mysterious. The only part I didn't love was that it felt overly wordy and flowery in some parts though once I got into its rhythm it wasn't to bad but could have been toned down for sure. Giving it a 4.5 but rounding up for Goodreads.
This is a hard one to rate, I did enjoy it and I think it does what it set out to do well. It is gross and definitely took me out of my comfort zone but overall was good read. It in my opinion a little predictable and there were parts at the end I wasn't as big a fan of. If you like more extreme horror I think this is a good and quick read.
