Enjoyable despite the topic
Very well written, I flew through this book. The descriptions were brilliant and the story moved along well. A few twists were foreseeable, but somehow still managed to surprise.
It was an interesting POV. I know it's fiction, but the theme of good people doing what's right during tragic and evil things like the holocaust is something I often wonder about. Who were they? What motivated them (aside from doing what was right)? How did they cope with the loss? Anger? Not set in a ghetto or internment camp, this story gave a different POV.
I should have known from the cover that it was a steamy romance, but I read an e-pub version with a different cover and hadn't read any of the reviews. The title simply made me giggle. I'm not a fan of spicy romance, but this one was well written, the sarcasm and wit was very entertaining, and the plot was engaging. If you're looking for a spicy and easy romantasy / monster romance / fantasy romance book, this is for you.
A darling book, it was fun to read, even though I somehow missed that it was a romance. For the record, I'm not against romance, just didn't realize it was one. That's all on me, and I still enjoyed it. There was so much going on as Jess adjusted to life in her new home, that romance was just one of the subplots. The supporting characters were great and well written.
I don't know why I read these type of books. I'm glad she got out and got help, but so many people live like this and need help it annoys me to read about it. I always get sucked in by the blurbs and then get annoyed by the content. That's not to say she's a bad writer. Not at all, her writing is great, very lyrical, I found a lot of quotes. I just don't don't want to read about terrible lives.
Was disappointed. Have mixed feelings about this book.Suicide and mental health are serious issues, and I'm glad there are books that address it. I can see how this would be a powerful book for teens. I understand how seemingly trivial things can snowball and weigh one down over time, but I felt like there was a lot missing somehow. And where were the parents? Other adults?
Sure it's a YA fantasy book, so I went in expecting it to be a bit something...not sure what the word is that I'm looking for. But I still enjoyed it. I listened to the audio version, it was just fantasy enough to be what I needed to be listening to right now. I'll listen to the sequel, it's already in my queue, so that use mean I enjoyed it. ;)
Book wasn't bad, but I think I had different expectations. It seemed repetitive, and maybe we need that to get the message to sink in. Answers and “How to” seemed vague to me. I found “So You Want to Talk about Race?” to be more informative. BUT I still think more people need to read this one ‘cause it's written to make people realize how race is present in every interaction we have.
