I liked this book.
I wanted to love it but the last third of the book felt like it was missing something. The beginning/middle was intense and often difficult to get through because of the abuse. I liked the plot and the twists and turns. I was really hoping for more about the relationship between Lee and Shaw but the book just ended...never really giving me the warm/fuzzy closure I was looking for.
This book is incredible and I love everything about it!
“Jim came tearing down the hill in his golf cart, Karen Walker regal and bored at his side. He was wearing enormous sunglasses that made him look like a bumble bee and some kind of... Was that a caftan? The deep V-neck exposed a pelt of black chest hair and a strand of beads.
He lumbered out, crushing me against him in a patchouli-scented hug. “Yes, it's a caftan,” he said, reading my mind. “We're extra casual when nobody's around.”
I smiled. “More casual than nudity?”
“Isn't it insane I get more judgmental comments about a caftan than I would a glitter jockstrap?” ”

I almost gave up on this book but ended up sticking with it. For me, the pacing was a little slow in the beginning and I found myself nodding off several times. This was my first book by Christina Lee and I wanted to give the author/book a chance.
Everything picked up about half-way through and I started to really like the characters and get into the story. I didn't know about equine therapy and found that to be an interesting element.
If you find it slow in the beginning - keep going...you'll be rewarded in the end.
The Dig Two Graves series is an epic story that has haunted me since I finished it days ago. I expect that I'll still be thinking of Ned and Cole weeks from now. Its been a while since I've a read a book that stirred up such a wide range of emotions - sometimes even all at once. I put my life on hold as I devoured this series. I couldn't put the books away as if the events in the story were happening in real-time and I didn't dare miss a thing.
Book 1 (The Man Who Loved Cole Flores) was fairly easy-going compared to the anxiety-inducing events that take place in Book 2 (The Man Who Hated Ned O'Leary). For me, it was intense. Really intense. Almost too intense. Even the tender moments were clouded with dreaded gloom that seemed hang around like an invisible character.
I loved both Ned and Cole but really sympathized more with Ned. I got frustrated with Cole about halfway through the book. I understand why he was upset about the betrayal but felt he should've been more forgiving after hearing Ned's explanation. The red light/green light game with Ned was frustrating but I didn't give up on them and I eventually accepted the angst and just went along for the ride. A torturous ride that was long, murky and twisted — but also full of beauty. I loved every minute of it!
In this series, KA Merikan delivered everything I look for in a great book. Amazing! I'm a huge fan and look forward to exploring more of their work - just not sure where to start!
