I watched The Last Unicorn a million times as a child in the 1980s but for some reason only now that I'm 40 did I pick up the book. I think I was afraid the magic would have faded, and I wanted to hold onto the memory of the film helping me survive those horrific, trauma-filled years. The book is beautiful and holds up well, though I found myself saddened when I got to the last page. Something about revisiting childhood gems makes them a little less ethereal, a little more flawed. But I love the story all the same, cracks and all. My rating is biased because my inner child would never forgive me for giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
I'm all for RH, sex scenes, monsters, hot trashy goodness, whatever. What I'm annoyed by are main characters who have no worthwhile character/personality and yet have all sorts of amazing people fall all over her. Look, I totally get the fantasy of “everyday girl suddenly being the popular one with all the people in a 500-mile radius falling straight in love/lust with her” (lots of romances and RHs are like that), but at least other books have actual INTERESTING main characters who have SOME semblance of awesomeness to them, whether quirks or wit or sweetness or whatever. This one is just bland. All I could think was, why the hell did any of these interesting monsters even deign to be hers? Then again, some have waited hundreds of years apparently so I guess getting sex after so long messes with your discernment.
Absolutely adorable. I had to run to Goodreads to post a 5-star review right after I finished the book, and boy do I wish there were way more pages. I wanted more of sweet Alphonse and Jacobi!! I love them so much and they deserved all the happiness. This story is a cozy, comfy read and I will definitely read this again any time I need a pick-me-up! So beautiful..
Wow. Cliopher Mdang and his Radiancy had me riveted for days, and now that the story is over, I'm so incredibly sad. Easily the best book I've read this year. This book is beautifully written and has catapulted itself to becoming my top favorite book of the last 3 years, at least ... dare I say maybe my favorite book ever? You have no idea how sad I felt when I saw that this was a standalone (as stated in the book's backmatter) ... and how absolutely delighted I am when I see there's other stories in the series shown here on Goodreads. OMG, I'm so happy!
I can't wait to read the author's other books as well.
I don't even know why I try LitRPG books. This one, like every single one I've tried, is just horribly written, featuring infuriating and immature characters and cringe-worthy plots. LitRPG is like gamer vomit on the page, and as a gamer myself I'm always so embarrassed to see how enthusiastic other gamers are about crappy writing.
The only good thing I can say about the entire subgenre is that it has gotten people who would never pick up a book to actually read something. Hopefully these readers will graduate to other genres and realize just how much better other books can be, because holy shit. I understand reading comfy, trashy books – I do it too when I need a mental break – but man, I really hope they read other things and expand their horizons beyond cringe-filled, grammatically crappy books.
I love trashy books and all, but this novel is just pure cringe. None of these characters (I guess besides Jagger and his family) are likeable. The dialogue is absolutely stupid; who the hell thinks anyone actually talks the way they do in this novel? It's written like an alien trying to simulate how people speak. It horrifies me that a book like this, with such low quality writing and low quality plot + characters, gets 5 star reviews. Also, don't get me started on the terrible comma usage. Please read a grammar book or something before publishing another book or find a different editor.
