Read It Together
I just finished reading this and my heart is heavy and light at the same time. Know what I mean? It's the kind of feeling described by the boy who just lost his mum and doesn't know how to sift through his emotions. He is helped by the kind of father we all wish we had.
The father is my favorite character, as he tries his best to be there for his son, to be frank and honest, not filling his head with comforting lies. There's a wonderful level of trust there. The author, Stephen, and I have something in common in that as children we recognized how important Dads are, because ours were lacking. His was physically and emotionally distant, and mine just wasn't there at all after the divorce. That taught us both the lesson and provided the motivation to be the best Dads we could be, given the chance. And it really shows in the story. I think this story could be just as helpful to parents helping their kids manage grief as it could be for the kids themselves. Maybe read it together. And then go build a dragon.
I enjoyed this a lot more than2nd shift.there was a lot more suspense, risk and some vital information moving the overall story along.
