I would say this felt more like a historical fantasy with a bit of a sci fi than a outright fantasy. I would have liked to delve into the engineering a bit more but it did help with the world building. If it were labeled as a dark academia that would also be plausible. The main plots of the murder mystery were done well and it did lead to a satisfying ending where I didn't want to kick the female protagonist, the male protagonist however deserves at least a kick in the shin. I wouldn't say it's really Mulan inspired except the disguising herself as male.
