Angie tried not to think much about politics. It didn't seem to matter who was in power. Nothing got better in the besieged breathtaking world that she cared about. The Everglades would never be the Lush unbroken river it once was the shallows of Florida Bay would never be as pure and sparkling with fish. The bleach dying reefs of the keys would never fully blend back to life. Being overrun and exploited was the historical fate of places. So rare and beautiful... All the treasured wilderness that had been sacrificed at the altar of growth was gone for all time. More more disappeared everyday. Nothing ever changed except the speed of destruction and only because there were fewer pristine pieces to sell off, carve up and pave.

Ch 7: She and Kate had wanted to come here, to the Louvre. She and Kate had wanted to see the things everyone else saw, too, but with their own eyes. That was how art, how anything, became immortal. Becoming a still point in the universe, around which endless bodies revolved.
Ch 12: Her real teenage crushes had been on girls: not romantically but well- Okay, not sexually? Not very sexually. Her friendships, unlike her relationships with boys, had anniversaries and inside jokes, beginnings and endings so specific she could pin them not just to the day, but to the hour.
Ch 22: It was a bad world to bet on, but all her chips were already in.
"Our parting hurt so acutely I realize not because we thought the geography was insurmountable or that the Christmas break was so far away. But because we didn't know the people we are about to change into, maybe we wouldn't be friends anymore or not close ones. What if everyone returned being all had such a great time and behaving subtly differently to make a clear priorities and intimacies had shifted acting like things were the same. But there was a new distance around each of us like castles with moats name dropping strangers with whom we'd forwarded mysterious exciting and inpenetrable new alliances. Nothing held the same power and mystique that the unknown did"
